They will remember the Alamo

A recent trip to San Antonio, TX brought more than a trip to the Alamo for three Davenport High School students.

Macie Hopkins, Sydney Zeiler and Hailey Arland walked away with first-place honors at the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) national leadership conference.

They won the leadership award for a community service project undertaken in partnership with Lincoln Hospital and Clinics. The project, “Taking the Next S.T.E.P. Towards Preventative Healthcare,” involved volunteer work in senior centers in Davenport, Harrington and Wilbur.

In San Antonio, the Davenport trio competed against a field of 120 national (and even a few international) teams boasting similarly impressive local achievements. After first-round presentations narrowing the field to 16 finalists, the team had to present again before a panel of judges and a live audience.

Coming off a first-place award at the earlier state leadership conference, they confidently discussed their project’s impact and the larger issues related to senior healthcare. First place was secured.

The famous 1836 battle cry, “Remember the Alamo” still rings loud in San Antonio. For Macie, Sydney and Hailey, it also rings loud for a national championship in 2019.
