Paraeducator Requirements

The standards of practice make up the foundation of the certificate program.

These standards must include:

  • Supporting instructional opportunities;
  • Demonstrating professionalism and ethical practices;
  • Supporting a positive and safe learning environment;
  • Communicating effectively and participating in the team process; and
  • Demonstrating cultural competency aligned with standards developed by the professional educator standards board under RCW 28A.410.270

Minimum Employment Requirements

A paraeducator must:

  • Be at least eighteen years of age and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university; or
  • Have earned seventy-two (72) quarter credits or forty-eight (48) semester credits at the one hundred (100) level or higher at an accredited college or university; or
  • Have completed an apprenticeship as a paraeducator, in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.

The paraeducator minimum employment requirements from HB 1115, passed by the Washington state legislature in 2017, and SB 6388 passed in 2018, are in (RCW) and WAC 179-03.
