Student Artists Bring a New Mural to Life at Spokane County Juvenile Detention Center
Posted on 09/16/2026
A new student-created mural is beginning to take shape at the Spokane County Juvenile Detention Center.
Students are working alongside mixed media artist Nancy Ocegueda to design and paint the latest in a series of murals created over the years throughout the Juvenile Detention Center and Success Through Academic Connections School.
The mural projects provide students with an opportunity to explore creativity, work collaboratively and contribute something meaningful to the spaces where they learn. Over time, the artwork has helped brighten walls throughout the facility while creating more welcoming environments that reflect student voice, growth and possibility.
The experience also gives students the chance to see a large-scale creative project develop from its earliest sketches to a finished work of art, building connections through the process and leaving behind a lasting contribution for others to enjoy.
Day 1 marked the beginning of the newest mural, with students already bringing flowers, birds and other colorful elements to life. We look forward to following their progress as the piece continues to develop.
