Two Spokane-area high school Hope Squads were honored for their outstanding contributions at the annual Chase Youth Awards ceremony held on April 29, 2025. The awards, presented by Spokane County's Chase Youth Commission, celebrate exceptional young individuals and groups who demonstrate leadership, compassion, and meaningful community service.
The Lewis & Clark High School Hope Squad was recognized in the Leadership, Teen Group category. Squad members, chosen by peers for their trustworthiness and empathy, consistently promote mental wellness at their school. Daily, they share mental health tips, and weekly, they produce videos discussing mental wellness strategies. They also spearheaded "Hope Week," a school-wide event aimed at raising awareness about mental health and suicide prevention, concluding with the distribution of life preserver-shaped cookies symbolizing unity and mutual support.
Ferris High School’s Hope Squad received the Judges Choice Award for their dedication to peer advocacy and crisis intervention. Squad members regularly sacrifice personal time to participate in meetings, community outreach events, and student support initiatives. They help students facing mental health challenges connect with trusted adults, counselors, and essential resources, reinforcing a school environment built on safety, care, and understanding.
These accolades affirm the powerful impact of student-led mental health initiatives in Spokane-area schools. Both squads exemplify youth leadership at its finest, actively transforming their communities through compassion, awareness, and proactive support.
