Posted on 11/24/2025
NEWESD 101 proudly congratulates Spokane Public Schools on being named the 2025 Large District Board of the Year by the Washington State School Directors’ Association (WSSDA). This distinguished recognition highlights the SPS Board’s commitment to strong governance, thoughtful listening and meaningful collaboration with the students, families and partners they serve.

Over the past several years, the Board strengthened its relationships with tribal leaders and worked closely with Native students and families to ensure supports reflect their needs and experiences. The results are significant. Native student graduation rates rose from 77 percent to 89 percent, attendance improved by 90 percent, and academic growth in middle-school English language arts climbed more than 200 percent.

In WSSDA’s award video, Board Director Hilary Kozel underscored the power of listening: “Success first starts by listening to all of our stakeholders and really elevating voices of underrepresented individuals.”

NEWESD 101 celebrates Spokane Public Schools for its leadership, collaboration and unwavering focus on student success. This honor reflects the district’s dedication to creating learning environments where every student has the opportunity to thrive.
