A Day of Heritage, Learning & Connection at Mary Walker School District
Posted on 11/20/2025

Mary Walker School District welcomed the Spokane Tribe on Nov. 19 for a heartfelt celebration of Native American Heritage Day. The event brought students, staff, families, and community members together to honor the history, culture, and living traditions of the Spokane Tribe.

The day opened with classroom learning experiences led by Spokane Tribal members, who shared stories, language, and cultural teachings with students. Across grade levels, students engaged in conversation and hands-on activities that deepened their understanding of local tribal history and the enduring presence of Native communities in northeast Washington.

In the gymnasium, students gathered for traditional dancing and demonstration. The energy of the crowd reflected deep respect and appreciation as dancers showcased regalia, songs, and movement passed down through generations.

Lunch featured a menu created with support from NEWESD 101’s Nutrition Services and Farm to School team, who helped prepare a meal that included freshly made fry bread served alongside student favorites. The shared meal added to the sense of connection and celebration throughout the day.
