Superintendents and Principals,
Below you will find a link to a downloadable .zip file of RED DAWN – Spokane Indian Legends of Emily M. Phillips.
RED DAWN is a collection of 14 legends retold by Emily M. Phillips in 1930. This new edition is illustrated by George Flett with Salish language audio by Ann McCrea. The editor, M. Jean Hauge (a retired teacher in the Spokane Public Schools), adds a Spokane history and research bibliography. This project was sponsored in part by the Spokane Arts Fund and Avista Corporation.
This is being provided to you so you can share with your elementary teachers and social studies teachers across the P-12 grade levels – a rich resource related to the history of our region.
Thanks to Jean Hauge for allowing this to be made available to all schools in northeast Washington.
After unzipping, open the PDF file 01Red_Dawn_Cover.pdf first to access the interactive index of stories. Several of the stories have an audio button near the end with Salish language vocabulary.
