Computer Science Education Week 2025

Computer Science Education Week: Coding futures in northeast Washington
Posted on 12/08/2025
Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 8-14) is a national celebration of the creativity, problem solving and real-world skills students gain when they learn to code. Across the NEWESD 101 region, that learning is happening in classrooms, after-school programs and community spaces from Spokane to Whitman County.

NEWESD 101’s Computer Science and EdTech team partners with schools to help students explore how computer science powers artificial intelligence, robotics and innovation in their everyday lives. Educators can borrow classroom-ready tools from the CS and EdTech Lending Library, including Sphero and Ozobot robots, LEGO SPIKE and micro:bit kits, MakeyMakey, 3D printers and more. These resources give students a chance to design, test and improve their own projects while building core computer science skills.

Regionwide, students are also participating in events such as FIRST LEGO League and FIRST Robotics, the Sphero Global Challenge and the Think Like an Engineer competition for younger learners. Each experience helps students work in teams, apply math and science, and see future careers in technology and engineering.

Support for educators is a key part of the work. NEWESD 101 offers professional learning opportunities on artificial intelligence in education, coding tools, inclusive CS practices and other topics to help teachers bring computer science to students at every grade level.

Educators and families who want to celebrate Computer Science Education Week can try an Hour of Code activity with students, explore NEWESD 101’s CS and EdTech lending library and professional learning, and learn more in the December Computer Science and EdTech newsletter.
