Valley & NEWESD 101: Growing Healthy Meals
Posted on 09/29/2025
Valley School District is one of only eight districts nationwide to receive a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Partnerships for Local Agriculture and Nutrition Transformation in Schools (PLANTS) Sub-Grant, administered by the Chef Ann Foundation. With support from NEWESD 101’s Nutrition Services, Valley has launched a three-year project to expand scratch-cooked recipes and source more local ingredients for school meals.

This initiative ensures students enjoy healthier, whole food options while the district builds lasting skills through professional training and collaboration.

A highlight of this work was a Meet Your Farmer Day that celebrated local agriculture and healthy eating. Students sampled a new “Big Mac Wrap” crafted with fresh vegetables, locally produced tortillas from De Leon Foods, and pasture-raised beef from Ramstead Ranch. Farmer Eileen of Ramstead Ranch shared how soil regeneration produces nutrient-rich food, and students voted to add the wrap to future menus. The event also featured interactive nutrition activities, encouraging students to explore healthy habits in fun, hands-on ways.

Valley’s efforts show how partnerships between schools, local farms, and regional services can reshape school meals for long-term health and sustainability.
