Administrator professional certificationThe Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) has recently moved to grant a three-year extension for those administrators who have a certificate expiring in 2017, 2018, or 2019.
Along with this, PESB is currently evaluating the overall efficacy of second tier licensure for administrators and may significantly modify or eliminate this requirement in the future.
Due to this extension and potential changes to the requirement, the Northeast Washington Educational Leadership Consortium (NEWELC) Administrator ProCert Program will be placed on hold until further notice.
The NEWELC ProCert program will not be offered during the 2017-18 school year.
Those candidates who are on the waiting list for the program, will be given first opportunity to enroll if the ProCert program is offered in the future.
All administrators who currently serve in the role of principal, assistant principal, or program administrator are encouraged to seek the three-year extension to their certificate. This can be done immediately or during the expiration year of the certificate.
The three-year extension “clock” starts the school year the application is submitted and approved through OSPI. For example, for administrators who hold a certificate that expires in 2018 but apply now, the extension will be valid until June 2020. If applied for next year, the certificate would expire June 2021.
The extension application is a short, two-page form that is downloaded, completed, and mailed to OSPI along with a check for $54. The application is not available on E-Cert and credit cards cannot be used for payment.
The application can be obtained from: http://www.k12.wa.us/certification/Certapp/4037.pdf
ESD 101 is available to answer questions concerning the extension process and the latest decisions by PESB concerning the Administrator ProCert requirement.
Please note, ProTeach is also under the oversight of PESB, but is not impacted by this certificate extension. Administrative ProCert and ProTeach are separate programs.
