May 21 program targets students
for College Bound Scholarships
Rogers High School in Spokane will be the site of a May 21 event for
families interested in the College Bound Scholarship program. Volunteers
will help families register online and dinner will be provided at no
cost. The program begins at 6 p.m.
College Bound is a scholarship program covering the cost of tuition and
books (at public college rates) and can be used to attend two- or
four-year public colleges or universities, most independent four-year
colleges, or one of many private career or vocational schools in
Washington.
To qualify, students must be enrolled in seventh or eighth grade, be
eligible for free- or reduced-priced lunches or be foster youth.
Participants sign a pledge to stay in school, demonstrate good
citizenship and graduate. If they make good on the pledge and meet
income requirements upon college enrollment, the scholarship is theirs
to claim.
Most students who qualify for the College Bound Scholarship also will
qualify for the State Need Grant, which provides grants to students
whose family incomes fall below 70 percent of the state median income.
Statewide, more than 7,000 middle school students already have signed up
to participate in College Bound. With the sign-up period for the first
year set to end when school adjourns in June, many school districts and
individual middle schools are making a final push to get as many
students as possible to participate.
Rogers High School is located at 1622 East Wellesley in northeast
Spokane. For more information, call 1-888-535-0747 or visit
