NEWESD 101 and Honeywell are working together to bring school districts an automated, multifunction, emergency notification system: Instant Alert. The Instant Alert system provides districts two options for participation:
- Media Notification. Under this option, all emergency alerts (snow closures, boiler failures, etc.) are sent to regional TV and radio stations as a general announcement and posted to NEWESD 101's Snow Closure & Other Alerts website. There is a maximum of five accounts per district provided for those authorized to submit an alert notice.
- Full Deployment. This option provides a method for districts to individually contact all staff, parents/guardians, students and the media, when appropriate, by phone (work, home and cell), email and/or text messaging. Have a sports bus running late? In addition to weather-related emergencies, you can set up a smaller alert group that allows you to update the team member's parents by sending a message just to them! Of course, any announcement can be posted to the NEWESD Alerts website, too.
Using the system...
SENDING AN ALERT: Alerts can be phoned in using a toll-free number, when an early morning decision is made from the end of a snowy road, or created using the online, Web-based form from any Internet-connected computer. Alerts can also be created in advance and scheduled for distribution.
REPORTING (Full Deployment only): Want to know if your message was received? The online reporting site provides additional information for each phone number by indicating whether the message was listened to or left with an answering machine. It also let's you know if any of the calls couldn't get through due to a busy signal (it tries several times) or because of a bad phone number.
SIS INTEGRATION: Instant Alert can integrate with your district's WSIPC/Skyward Student Information System, as well as SASI, PowerSchool, TIES, and Infinite Campus, to automatically pull information already available. The ability to incorporate student and staff data from other SI systems is also available, although they generally require a simple, manual upload of data in an spreadsheet-like file.
PASSWORD PROTECTED: Only authorized administrators and staff can submit an alert using individual user IDs and passwords. When submitting an alert by phone, you'll be asked for your security information. Online, simply login to the Instant Alert website using your user ID and password. However, the system is only secure if you don't share your security information with anyone else.
TRAINING AND SUPPORT: Although it's an easy to use system, training and support is available from the regional Honeywell Instant Alert representative at no charge.
